LoCo Magstripe Cards FAQs
Get answers to common questions about our blank LoCo magnetic stripe cards.
What are LoCo magstripe cards used for?
LoCo magstripe cards are commonly used for membership cards, loyalty cards, hotel key cards and other applications where information needs to be read by swiping the card through a compatible magnetic-stripe reader.
Your reader or system must be compatible with LoCo magnetic stripes, so we recommend checking its requirements before ordering.
What is the difference between LoCo and HiCo magstripe cards?
LoCo stands for low coercivity. LoCo stripes are easier to encode and are commonly used for hotel key cards and other cards that may be issued for shorter periods.
HiCo magnetic stripes are more resistant to accidental erasure and are generally better suited to cards that will be used frequently over a longer period.
The correct option depends on your reader and existing card system. If you need the more durable option, see our HiCo Magnetic Stripe Cards.
Are these LoCo magstripe cards supplied encoded?
No. These are blank, unencoded cards. The magnetic stripe will need to be encoded with the data required by your system before it can be used.
Can I encode these cards using my ID card printer?
Only if your ID card printer includes a magnetic-stripe encoder that supports LoCo cards. A standard ID card printer can print the cards but cannot write data to the magnetic stripe unless the correct encoding module is installed.
Check your printer specification or contact us with the printer model if you are unsure.
Can I print these cards using any ID card printer?
These cards are a standard CR80 credit-card size and are suitable for printing with plastic ID card printers.
However, printing and encoding are separate functions. You will need a printer with a compatible LoCo magnetic-stripe encoder if you also want to encode the stripe during printing.
Will LoCo cards work with any magnetic-stripe reader?
Not necessarily. Magnetic-stripe readers and systems may be configured for LoCo or HiCo cards, and the required encoding format can also vary.
Check the specification of your existing reader, encoder or cards before ordering. Matching the stripe type alone does not guarantee that the card will work with your system.
