What is Card Personalisation?
Card personalisation basically means making each card individual, i.e. printing them with unique information. You’ll also hear this referred to as ‘variable data’.
This could be printing each card with a member’s name, membership number, expiry date, photograph or individual barcode/QR code for example.
Usually, base cards are printed in bulk first, containing all of the branding and design elements that are common across the cards.
These base cards are then personalised on demand – i.e. printed with individual data, which is supplied from either a database or via secure API integration.
How Card Personalisation Works
Card personalisation is typically carried out as a structured process to ensure accuracy, consistency and efficiency across every personalised card produced.

- Base cards are produced
Cards are printed in bulk with all branding, colours and design elements that remain the same across every card. - Cardholder data is prepared
Individual data such as names, membership numbers, barcodes or photographs is supplied from a database or secure API integration. - Cards are personalised
Each card is printed with its unique information using variable data printing, ensuring every card is tailored to the individual. - Quality and accuracy checks
Cards are checked to ensure the correct data has been applied and that print quality meets the required standard. - Cards are issued or fulfilled
Personalised cards are either supplied in bulk or combined with letters, inserts and mailing services as part of a full card fulfilment process.
This process ensures every personalised card is produced accurately while maintaining consistency across your entire card programme.
Where card personalisation is used
Card personalisation is used across a wide range of industries and applications where cards need to be issued to individuals.
Common uses include:
- Membership cards for clubs and organisations
- Loyalty cards for retail and hospitality
- ID cards for staff, students and visitors
- RFID and access control cards
- EV charging cards and transport cards
By combining consistent design with unique data, card personalisation allows businesses to issue cards at scale while still tailoring each one to the individual.
