How De Vere Moved Its Hotel Key Cards to Wood
De Vere wanted a more sustainable alternative to its traditional PVC RFID hotel key cards and door hangers. After comparing different wood types, bamboo, full-colour printing and laser engraving, the hotel group selected cherry wood for its durability and consistently high-quality finish.

Can wooden hotel key cards work with my hotel lock system?
Often, yes. Wood and bamboo hotel key cards can be produced for a range of hotel locking systems, but compatibility depends on the existing card technology, RFID chip or magnetic-stripe specification. Send us the lock-system manufacturer and details of your current key card so we can confirm the correct specification before production.
Can wooden key cards use a magnetic stripe as well as RFID?
Yes, selected wood and bamboo key cards can be supplied with either a magnetic stripe or compatible RFID technology. The correct option depends on your hotel lock or access-control system, so compatibility should always be checked before ordering.
Can wood and bamboo cards be printed on both sides?
Double-sided printing is available for many wood and bamboo card specifications. The available print area may vary where an RFID chip, magnetic stripe, slot or hole is required, so we will check your artwork and card specification before production.
Can I test a wood or bamboo card before placing a full order?
Yes. Request a sample pack to compare the different wood types, bamboo and finish options. For RFID or magnetic-stripe cards, we also recommend testing the agreed card specification with your lock or access-control system before approving the full order. Paid press-proof samples featuring your own artwork are available before full production.
How durable are wood and bamboo cards compared with PVC cards?
Wood and bamboo are natural materials and are not generally as durable as PVC. Wood is usually firmer and more hard-wearing than bamboo, while bamboo can be more flexible. We recommend testing a sample if the cards will be handled frequently.
Will every wood or bamboo card look exactly the same?
No. Natural variation in grain, colour and finish should be expected. Wood usually provides greater consistency across a production run, while bamboo can show more variation. These differences are part of the natural character of the material.
Which wood types are available, and is the price the same?
We offer bamboo, beech, birch, black walnut and cherry. Prices are the same per wood, but may differ according to the print finish or technology chosen. Cherry is our hardest-wearing wood option. We recommend requesting a tailored sample pack to compare the materials before deciding.
Are wooden and bamboo cards recyclable or biodegradable?
That depends on the complete card specification. Inks, coatings, adhesives, magnetic stripes and RFID components can affect the appropriate end-of-life route. RFID chips and inlays should not be treated as recyclable wood, so ask us about the construction of your chosen card and follow local recycling guidance.
What is the production lead time?
Production lead times vary according to the product, order quantity, finish, technology and artwork approval. A guide time is shown on each product page, and we will confirm the expected production schedule once your specification and artwork have been agreed.
