Custom hotel key card FAQs

Are hotel key cards universal?

No. Hotel key cards are not universal, and cards that look almost identical may use different technologies or specifications. Your hotel may use RFID/contactless, MIFARE®, magstripe or another card type, depending on the door-lock system installed. If you are unsure which hotel key card you need, we can help identify the correct option and provide sample cards for testing before you place a full order.

Will custom key cards work with my existing hotel door-lock system?

Only if the RFID chip, programming or magnetic stripe matches your existing system. We supply options for many commonly used systems, including Onity, Salto, Dormakaba, and can help check the specification before you order.

How do I identify which RFID key card technology I need?

Firstly, tell us what brand of door lock you have, and the details of the software you use during check in. Check your current cards or previous invoice for a product code, frequency or technology name. You can also send us photographs and system details so our team can help narrow down the options.

What is the difference between RFID and magstripe hotel key cards?

RFID cards communicate with the lock when held near the reader, while magnetic-stripe cards are normally swiped or inserted. The correct option is determined by your existing door-lock system.

Do hotel key cards need programming?

Printing adds your branding but does not add access permissions. Cards normally need to be encoded or enrolled using the hotel’s door-lock software and encoder. The exact process depends on the card technology and system.

Can I request a sample before ordering?

Yes. We tailor samples around what you are considering, which can include different materials and finishes, a functioning RFID card for compatibility testing, or a magnetic-stripe card where required. Paid press-proof samples are also available if you would like to approve your own design and finish before full production.

Can hotel key cards be personalised?

Yes. Individual names, numbers, barcodes or QR codes can be printed on each card at an additional cost. Other options include multiple designs, spot varnish, signature panels and encoded or unencoded magnetic stripes.

Can hotel key cards be recycled or made from sustainable materials?

Yes. Hotel key cards are available in a range of more sustainable materials, including recycled PVC, bio PVC, wood and bamboo. The best option will depend on your hotel’s door-lock system, the technology required and the finish you would like. We can help you compare the different materials and provide samples before ordering.

Can wood and bamboo hotel key cards contain RFID technology?

Yes. Wood and bamboo hotel key cards can be produced with compatible RFID technology, allowing hotels to combine contactless room access with a more distinctive and sustainable-looking key card. Compatibility depends on your lock system and the RFID specification required, so we recommend confirming your system and testing a sample before placing a full order.

How long do custom hotel key cards take to produce?

Typical turnaround times after payment and artwork approval are 10 working days for PVC, 10–12 working days for biodegradable PVC, three to four weeks for recycled PVC and around four weeks for wood cards and RFID wristbands. Some orders may be produced sooner, depending on the specification and supplier availability, so contact us before ordering if you have a deadline.
