Evolis Zenius Expert – Frequently Asked Questions
Helpful answers for customers looking at the original Evolis Zenius Expert, including replacement options, compatible ribbons and support for existing users.
Replacement model & buying advice
What to choose now that the original Zenius has been superseded.
Is the Evolis Zenius Expert still available?
The original Evolis Zenius Expert has now been superseded by the upgraded Evolis Zenius 2 range. For new printer purchases, we recommend choosing either the Evolis Zenius 2 Classic or the Evolis Zenius 2 Expert.
What replaced the Evolis Zenius Expert?
The Evolis Zenius 2 range replaces the original Zenius. The newer models offer updated performance, improved usability and current software support. You can read our full guide comparing the Evolis Zenius vs Zenius 2 if you want to understand what has changed.
Should I choose Zenius 2 Classic or Zenius 2 Expert?
Choose the Zenius 2 Classic if you need straightforward single-sided ID card printing from one computer. Choose the Zenius 2 Expert if you need Ethernet connectivity, network sharing, or optional card encoding. Our guide explains the difference between Zenius 2 Classic vs Zenius 2 Expert.
Can I still use this page if I already own a Zenius?
Yes. This page can still be useful for existing Zenius users who need legacy specifications, downloads, compatible ribbon information or printer support. If you are buying a new printer, we recommend moving to the Zenius 2 range instead.
Printing, ribbons & compatibility
Useful information for existing Zenius users.
Can the original Evolis Zenius Expert print on both sides?
The original Evolis Zenius Expert is a single-sided printer, so it does not print both sides automatically. You can still print on both sides manually by printing one side, flipping the card, then printing the reverse. For a fuller explanation, read our guide on printing double-sided cards on a single-sided printer.
What ribbon does the original Evolis Zenius use?
The original Evolis Zenius uses ribbons made specifically for the Zenius range, including full-colour and monochrome ribbon options. Ribbons are printer-specific, so always check compatibility before ordering. If the ribbon letters feel confusing, our guide explains what ID card printer ribbon letters mean.
Does the Zenius 2 use the same ribbons as the original Zenius?
No, not necessarily. The original Zenius and the newer Zenius 2 use different consumables, so you should always choose ribbons listed as compatible with your exact printer model. If you are unsure, contact us before ordering and we will help you choose the correct ribbon.
Is the original Zenius a direct-to-card printer?
Yes. The original Evolis Zenius is a direct-to-card printer, which means it prints directly onto the surface of the card. Direct-to-card printers are a good fit for everyday staff ID cards, membership cards and visitor passes, but they may leave a slim border on full-card designs. You can read our guide to direct-to-card vs retransfer ID card printers if you are comparing print technologies.
Software, support & next steps
What to do if you need help choosing or upgrading.
What software did the Evolis Zenius Expert use?
The original Zenius was commonly supplied with entry-level card design software, depending on the bundle or setup purchased. If you are replacing your printer, it is worth checking whether your current software will still meet your needs. Our guide explains what ID card software is and why you need it.
Should I repair my old Zenius or upgrade to Zenius 2?
If your original Zenius is still working well and you only need ribbons or basic support, keeping it running may be fine. If you are buying a new printer, need better connectivity, or want current support and updated software options, the Zenius 2 range is the better route forward.
I’m not sure which replacement printer to choose. What should I do?
The quickest option is to take our printer quiz or contact our team with your card volume, card type and whether you need encoding. We will recommend the most suitable printer based on how you actually use it, without pushing you towards features you do not need.
