Wood Printing Guide
Wood is a natural product so by its very nature each card produced will be slightly different depending on the grains of the particular piece of wood.
Wood Types
Bamboo is the most sustainable of materials due to how quickly it grows, but it’s also a much softer material as it’s technically a grass. It is less robust and durable than the other woods, so you can expect more ‘bend’ in the cards. You’ll also get far greater variations in colour and finish when using Bamboo. If consistency of design and print is important to you, we suggest considering Cherry, Birch or Beech instead. Cherry is the hardest wearing.
Printing or Engraving?
You can choose to have your cards printed or laser engraved or include a combination of both.
- Engraving is best for simple designs and limited text. You can expect greater variations between the look of each card.
- Printing is suitable for more complex designs and multiple or small text. We recommend print where legibility and consistency of print finish is important.

Looking to be more sustainable with your choice of RFID smart card?
These wood RFID cards and bamboo RFID cards are an immediate way to demonstrate your eco principles to guests, members and customers. Unlike plastic that's used in the majority of RFID cards and Hotel Key Cards, these wooden RFID cards will degrade naturally over time. Please note however that the embedded chip is not recyclable.
Ideal for travel and transportation use, cashless payments, access control and door entry.

We offer all standard industry chips including MIFARE®, Fudan, Paxton, Salto and NTAG. We can also supply Wooden Key Cards and Bamboo Key Cards to work with most door lock systems. We recommend getting a sample card from us to test before placing an order.

You can choose to have laser engraving on your cards, or full colour print. You can also combine them both. To understand when to use one over the other please read our Wood Card Printing Guide. Please note that by their nature, wooden cards are not as durable or as long lasting as PVC or plastic cards.

Will your Wood Key Cards work in my specific Hotel Door Locking system?
Wood and bamboo RFID cards are available for many commonly used hotel door-lock systems, including Salto, Onity and Dormakaba. Compatibility depends on the exact lock system, chip and encoding requirements. Send us your current card or system details and we can help identify the appropriate specification and provide a sample to test.
Is there a price difference depending on which wood I choose for my cards?
Prices start from 66p per card and may vary slightly depending on the material, RFID technology, quantity and finish. We will confirm the final price once the complete specification has been agreed.
Is one wood more sustainable than another?
Bamboo grows and replenishes quickly, making it a rapidly renewable material. However, it is generally softer and more flexible than the solid wood options. Durability, expected service life and the required RFID construction should all be considered when choosing a material.
Can I have engraving and printing on my cards?
Yes, you can combine both engraving and colour print on your wood cards if you wish.
Engraving is usually better suited to simple images and logos, whereas text will always be more legible in print. We're happy to advise you on what will work best with your specific design.
Will all my wood cards look the same?
Wood is by its nature a natural product, therefore each card will be slightly different depending on the grain or colour of the particular piece of wood used. You should expect variances in colour and texture throughout the card run. This is what makes them unique.
Generally speaking you get more inconsistencies using bamboo due to its softer nature, so if consistency of the finished product is most important to you we would recommend going with a wood rather than bamboo.
I’ve got small details on my cards, am I better with engraving or printing?
We always recommend any small text or complicated design is done with print only to aid legibility.
Engraving is best used for large text or simple design elements.
Are your wood cards as long lasting as PVC?
No. Because wood is a natural degradable product, they aren’t as durable or as long lasting as PVC cards.
Which Wood should I choose for my Hotel Key Cards?
The different woods give different finishes, particularly Bamboo, which is why we recommend getting a sample pack from us so you can see the different woods for yourself before ordering.
Some woods like Cherry are well suited to engraving, whereas you get more consistent results on Bamboo with printing.
Bamboo is more sustainable due to how quickly it grows and replenishes, however it is not as durable as other woods and you will experience more of a ‘bend’ with a bamboo card.
You can also expect more of a variation in terms of the print or engraving finish on bamboo cards when compared to wood.
Can you send me out a sample wood card?
Yes. We tailor samples around the materials, finishes and card technology you are considering. This can include a functioning RFID card for compatibility testing or a magnetic-stripe card if required. Paid press-proof samples featuring your own artwork are also available.
