A Plastic ID card is often used as an identification document intended to verify that you are who you say you are. Plastic ID cards are compact and easy to travel with. This form of card often varies and is dependant on what the Plastic ID card is being used for (i.e. library card, restricted access card, qualification card such as a drivers licence) but standard information commonly includes the cardholder’s photograph and name. Other items on the Plastic ID card may consist of membership codes, date of birth or contact details.

Many modern identity cards are electronic and include biometrical information contained when the card is swiped or scanned; much of that biometric information is further information of the bearer of the card which is not included on the front of the card. Innovations of biometrical information now means that more in depth information can be inserted to the cards memory including iris measurements or fingerprints, these forms of identification will only typically be found of cards used for assess to restricted areas or access to important files within specific corporations.

There is a communal impression in a number of countries that require the population to all carry Plastic ID cards that they are a burden allowing governments to take control of our lives but in other areas in which they are used they are an essential utensil to allow privacy to individual information and personal belongings, as well as security purposes for business and restricted information.
